IV. architectural theory.

My Theory:

Fluidity & Interconnectedness with Distinction.

My theory explores the relationship between space within a building. It expresses the interconnectedness, flow and fluidity of space. As identified in the article mashup, architecture is traditionally static and 'non fluid.' However contemporary movements have started challenging and questioning this stance.

Thus, this serves as the catalyst for my exploration. I'm exploring in my model, the concept of space, defined through walls, structures and elements. However, holistically  the structure and the space remains essentially open. Unlike the traditional house, there isn't definitive spaces for example the bedroom, the living room governed by walls and doors. Rather an environment that is fluid and interconnected and yet still contains definable spaces.

I was surprised to come across in my study, that open plan itself doesn't actually improve collaboration or communication within the work place. It has actually been proven to unproductive and detrimental to workers. However, a hybrid of open plan with the recognition and establishment of private sectors has benefits. It is this hybrid that I am attempting to mirror.

My theory was further enhanced by the choice of the Brick Country House. The design of the house, in terms of internal structure mirrors my theory. The walls in the building are 'floating' objects and does not develop spaces through the traditional means of rectilinear spaces.

Experiment 3: The Bridge.

PROCEDURE

Imagine you are the Dean of a school of Architecture, Architectural Computing or Engineering. Your school has 100 students who are drawn from all around the world and are supported by scholarships. Your challenge is to design a school that forms a bridge spanning a valley. The valley should be inspired by a landscape from your country of origin (so while it is custom designed by each student the valley has a strong connection to a real place in the world). In addition, you will design an architectural folly on the valley floor where you will host a monthly "Deans Lunch" to discuss theories of Architecture, Architectural Computing or Engineering with your students. Finally, design two moving elements that modify the students view of the school and architectural folly, when they see them from either location, in such a way that reinforces or challenges your particular "Theory".

VIII. one environment.

Final Environment:
week seven

final environment development combined with textures.

A space framed by rough jagged mountains which reflect the chaotic, apocalyptic approach of Lebbeus Wood's work.  The monuments situated precariously on the cliffs further capture the hostile environment.

The curvilinear monument to SANAA provides retribution to students from the harsh landscape in which it is settled. The soft rounded landscape helps to provide a sanctuary. The simplistic layout allows for greater collaboration due to space.

The mountainous terrain provides shading to the space during the afternoon sun. It creates harsh shadows which are neutralised by the natural curves of the space and the monument. Further, the situation of Lebbeus Wood's monument makes it seem during the afternoon that the curves of SANAA's monument creates a rectilinear shadow.

I chose the heavy texture as seen above on the hanging element of the monument to reflect Lebbeus Wood's concepts. It reflects his development of architecture which disregarded the ground plane. Medium texture is added to the beam connecting this element to further enforce Wood's challenge of gravity and conventional understandings.
